We Accept Easy Explanations Instead of the Truth about Learning Styles and Digital Natives
This week’s materials challenged two of my ideas that were shaped by the internet. It's the belief in “digital natives” and the belief in fixed “learning styles.” After I watched Visitors & Residents: A Challenge to Digital Natives, it made me realize how persuasive and limiting these labels can be.
In Digital natives in the scientific literature, I was especially struck by how intuitive both myths feel. The “digital native” idea, which was first popularized by Marc Prensky, suggests that people born into the digital age naturally think differently and are automatically fluent with technology. I grew up hearing that my generation was raised differently, faster, more multitasking, more tech-knowing. It sounded like a positive attribute to have. But the research actually is more complex. A 2024 study in Computers in Human Behavior by Pekka Mertala and colleagues shows that the term “digital native” persists in academic literature even though it has been heavily criticized and reinterpreted over time. Rather than disappearing, the concept evolved, often times used more metaphorically than scientifically. That surprised me. I assumed scholars had mostly moved on from the term.
The Visitors and Residents video offered a much more nuanced approach. Instead of dividing people by age, it focuses on motivation and context. Sometimes I use the internet as a “visitor” which is quickly looking up an article for class and leaving no trace. Other times, I’m a “resident,” posting, commenting, and building a digital identity. This model feels more realistic because it doesn’t assume that being born after 2000 automatically makes someone digitally competent. In fact, I know many people my age who struggle with basic digital literacy skills like evaluating sources or managing privacy settings. Being comfortable on social media does not mean being skilled with technology.
The learning styles myth felt even more personal. For years, teachers asked whether I was a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner. I internalized the idea that I was a “visual learner.” But The Biggest Myth in Education explains that there’s no solid evidence that matching instruction to a preferred learning style improves outcomes. Additional research from the University of Michigan’s Center for Academic Innovation supports this, emphasizing that while students may have preferences, tailoring teaching to those preferences does not reliably increase learning. What actually helps is engaging with material in multiple ways like retrieval practice, elaboration, and spaced repetition.
What surprised me most is how persistent these myths are despite the lack of evidence. Both the “digital native” and “learning styles” concepts survive because they are simple and appealing. They give us a quick way to categorize people. But that simplicity can be harmful. When students believe they can only learn one way, they may avoid challenges that require different skills. When educators assume young people are automatically digitally fluent, they may fail to teach critical digital literacy skills explicitly.
Reflecting on my own education, I can see both myths at work. Teachers sometimes assumed we “just knew” how to use technology effectively. At the same time, lessons were occasionally designed around catering to learning styles rather than focusing on evidence-based strategies. I wonder how much stronger my skills might be if more emphasis had been placed on metacognition and deliberate practice instead of labels.
I’m left with important questions: Why do educational myths persist even after being debunked? Is it because they make teaching feel more personalized? Or because they align with our intuitions about identity?
